This 2019 study examines the dramatic decline of the Angelshark (Squatina squatina) in the coastal waters of Wales. Because long-term scientific monitoring data for this rare shark were limited, researchers combined historical records, interviews with fishers and other sea users, and records of Angelshark sightings and captures to reconstruct changes in the population over several decades.
After accounting for changes in observation effort and people’s ability to recall past sightings, the researchers estimated that Angelshark abundance in the study area had declined by approximately 70% over 46 years. The species had once been widely reported along the Welsh coast, but its distribution contracted substantially, with Cardigan Bay emerging as an important remaining area for Angelsharks.
The study provides the first quantitative time series showing the timing and scale of the Angelshark’s decline in Welsh coastal waters. It also demonstrates the value of historical observations and local knowledge when studying rare marine animals for which conventional scientific survey data may be scarce. The researchers identified remaining areas of Angelshark occurrence that could help focus future conservation efforts.
