The distribution, ecology and predicted habitat use of the Critically Endangered angelshark (Squatina squatina) in coastal waters of Wales and the central Irish Sea

This 2022 study investigates the distribution, ecology, and habitat use of the Critically Endangered Angelshark (Squatina squatina) in coastal waters around Wales and the central Irish Sea. Researchers compiled 2,231 Angelshark records, together with historical and anecdotal information dating back more than two centuries, to better understand where the species has occurred and how its distribution has changed.

The researchers examined Angelshark records from 1812 to 2020 and used habitat modeling to identify areas that may provide suitable habitat for the species. The study found evidence that Angelsharks continue to occur in Welsh waters and identified areas where environmental conditions may be particularly suitable. The records also provide information about seasonal movements, including increased use of shallower coastal waters during parts of the year.

The study demonstrates how historical records, sightings, fisheries information, and modern habitat modeling can be combined to learn more about a rare species that is difficult to study directly. The findings can help guide future research, monitoring, and conservation efforts for Angelsharks in Wales and the central Irish Sea.
