The Shortfin Mako Shark is the fastest shark in the world. What Is a Shortfin Mako Shark?

The Shortfin Mako Shark (Isurus oxyrinchus) is a member of the mackerel shark family, Lamnidae. This family also includes Great White Sharks, Salmon Sharks, and Porbeagle Sharks.

Its streamlined body, pointed snout, crescent-shaped tail, and stiff fins are perfectly designed for speed. Few marine predators can match its ability to chase fast-moving prey across the open ocean.

The genus name Isurus comes from Greek words meaning “equal tail,” originally describing the shark’s tail lobes as matching in length. In reality, the upper lobe is somewhat longer than the lower one, so the name isn’t entirely accurate. The species name oxyrinchus comes from Greek and Latin words meaning “sharp snout.”

The Shortfin Mako is one of only two living mako species. It represents one of evolution’s finest examples of an animal perfectly adapted for speed.

Physical Appearance

Shortfin Mako Sharks have sleek, spindle-shaped bodies that minimize resistance as they move through the water. Adults typically measure between 10 and 12 feet (3 to 3.7 meters) long, although exceptionally large individuals may exceed 13 feet (4 meters). Females grow noticeably larger than males.

Their backs are metallic blue to dark blue, fading to a brilliant white underside that provides countershading.

The pointed snout reduces drag, while the large crescent-shaped tail generates tremendous thrust. Long, narrow pectoral fins and stiff dorsal fins provide stability during high-speed swimming.

Their mouths contain slender, sharply pointed teeth that often remain visible even when the mouth is closed. Unlike the serrated teeth of Great White Sharks, Mako teeth are smooth-edged. They’re designed for gripping fast-moving fish rather than cutting large pieces of flesh.

Where Do Shortfin Mako Sharks Live?

Shortfin Makos live in temperate and tropical oceans around the world, from about 60°N to 50°S.

They spend most of their lives in the pelagic zone, often far from land, although they occasionally approach continental coastlines where food is abundant. FishBase records the species from the surface to depths of about 2,900 feet (888 meters). They’re usually found much shallower, though, generally within about 500 feet (150 meters) of the surface.

Satellite tracking has revealed that some individuals travel thousands of miles between feeding and breeding areas, crossing entire ocean basins.

Once prey is detected, the shark accelerates with explosive power, using rapid tail beats to close the distance. Its streamlined body and warm muscles let it maintain high speeds while making quick turns during pursuit.

The attack usually ends with a swift bite from its narrow, pointed teeth before the prey has time to escape.

Reproduction and Life Cycle

Shortfin Makos reproduce through ovoviviparity, also called aplacental viviparity, with embryos developing inside eggs that remain within the mother’s body.

As development continues, the embryos feed on unfertilized eggs produced by the mother in a process known as oophagy.

After a gestation period of approximately 15 to 18 months, females give birth to litters. Litter size can range from 4 to 25 pups, depending on the study. Many females appear to reproduce only once every two to three years, adding to the species’ naturally slow population growth.

Newborn Makos measure about 2 feet (60 to 70 centimeters) long and begin hunting independently almost immediately.

Because they grow slowly and may not reach maturity for many years, Shortfin Mako populations recover slowly after declines. Some individuals have been documented living 24 to 32 years or more.

Shortfin Makos evolved within the mackerel shark family alongside other fast-swimming ocean predators. Over millions of years, natural selection favored increasingly streamlined bodies, powerful swimming muscles, and specialized circulatory systems capable of maintaining elevated body temperatures. These adaptations let Makos hunt highly active prey that slower sharks could rarely capture.

Although closely related to Great White Sharks, Makos followed a different evolutionary path, becoming specialists in chasing fast pelagic fish rather than hunting marine mammals.
