After a gestation period of approximately nine months, females give birth to litters of pups. Litters usually number around 2, though some studies report litters as large as 6. Newborn Thresher Sharks measure approximately 3.7 to 5 feet (114 to 150 centimeters) long and are capable of hunting independently soon after birth.

Like many large sharks, they mature slowly and produce relatively few offspring, limiting their ability to recover from population declines. Some individuals have been documented living 38 to 50 years.
